COFFEE GRINDING – THE BASICS

GRINDING COFFEE – DOING IT CORRECTLY

Why grind your own coffee when you can simply buy it ground at the supermarket? Quite simply because of the aroma. After all, you can only enjoy the full flavour of your coffee by freshly grinding the beans right before you make it. Modern coffee grinders allow you to produce different coffee grind sizes, depending on your personal taste and preferred brewing method. While a coarse grind size is required for a French press, a finer grind size is recommended for brewing coffee with a hand filter or coffee machine.

WHICH GRIND SIZE FOR WHICH COFFEE?

FILTER COFFEE GRIND SIZE

If you brew your coffee using a hand filter or coffee machine, you should set your coffee grinder to a medium grind size. This allows you to get the most aroma during slow brewing process.

FRENCH PRESS GRIND SIZE

When making coffee in a French Press, you should grind with a coarser coffee. Since the coffee steeps for a longer period, the aroma can be gently released without making the coffee too bitter.

ESPRESSO MAKER GRIND SIZE

When preparing coffee or espresso with a filter holder, we recommend a very fine grind size. Because the water hits the coffee very quickly and at high pressure, it can quickly release the most possible aroma from the coffee.

Grinding your own coffee – the benefits

If you grind your coffee beans with the coffee grinder shortly before brewing, you can reliably enjoy the exact flavour you’re looking for and it is simply more aromatic overall. Bear in mind that the aromas dissipate relatively quickly after coffee is ground. Therefore, coffee that's ground days or even weeks ago is less aromatic than freshly ground coffee.

Grinding coffee – how long can you store it?

That’s precisely why we recommend that you keep your freshly ground coffee (as well as the unground beans) for no longer than 14 days. While stored, they should be in a cool, dark place inside an airtight container.
